How to select artwork that works well together
I often get asked how to start a gallery wall or which art prints work well together, so I’d show you a few options to help kick off your creative juices. When I first begin picking paintings that could work together I like to think about the space, are these going to hang close to each other (like in a gallery wall or paired over a entry table? Art they going to simply be in the same room but not necessarily side by side?)
Thinking about these questions can help you select the right artwork for you home, it can help with size selections and colors.
If I’m selecting art for a gallery wall or 2-3 pieces that will hang together, I like to think about color tones or selecting a couple colors that can be found in each art piece to help keep the groupings cohesive.
When you do something like this it allows you to get creative with what the subject matter is, have fun mixing and matching landscapes and abstracts, florals and seascapes. I like to think that there are some basic rules, but really if it’s your home that you’re decorating so don’t be afraid to experiment and pick pieces that make you feel something!
I also love to mix in family photos or pictures of places we’ve visited if I'm putting together a gallery wall for an extra personalized touch and even when I’m working on a project like that I use the same basic rule… do I have a 1-2 colors that can be found in all of my art/photo selections.
Asking that ONE simple question can free up so much stress in my opinion when it comes to picking artwork for your home. And honestly, I LOVE having original art in my home, but selecting art prints to have in the mix allows some financial freedom to pick larger artwork or even having fun switching out artwork seasonally if that’s something you love to do.
Regardless, remember have fun, play around, find what speaks to you and surround yourself with it!
