a day in the life...

So I figured that I would give you a peek at what a day of work looks like for someone studying Interior Design. Today my project was to find certain Design Principles within my own home and if I didn't have them already in play then I needed to create them.  The design principles that are applied in these photos are Symmetrical Balance, Rhythm through Radiation, Asymmetrical Balance, Designer controlled Focal Point, Rhythm through Progression and Radial Balance. These are 6 of the 10 Design Principles that any Interior Designer must know.

Without these basic principles of design being applied, many spaces do not feel balanced or have a sense of disorder. I thought that It would be fun to share some of these principles, many of your homes may already be applying these simple principles, or maybe now you will want to adjust a few things :)

Symmetrical Balance:
and invisible line creating two
mirrored parts.

Rhythm through Radiation:
created by involving a center point which
draws the eye outward

Asymmetrical Balance:
if you were to have an invisible center line the
two parts would not be identical,
this created an informal sense of balance.

Designer Controlled Focal Point:
this is applied when there are no
architectural focal points, the designer creates a
focal point with in a previously void space.

Rhythm through Progression:
a slight change in gradation. For example,
the canisters are arranged from large to small
showing a gradual change in design.

Radial Balance:
Balance is created by having a center point and
than placing the objects evenly around it.
(my living room is small so the principle is hard to see fully
because of the TV and book shelves.)
